The U.S. Internet giant Google on Wednesday unveiled a new thinner and more powerful its tablet “Nexus 7″ version, intended to put more pressure on rival Apple iPad.
The tablet of 7 inches (17.8 centimeters) diagonally, manufactured by Taiwan-based Asus is thinner than 2 mm and a little narrower than the previous version which was launched last year.
“It’s actually a huge difference when we take in hand. It passes more easily in a bag or a coat,” said Hugo Barra, vice president of the mobile division of Google, Android, leaving the device the back of his pants pocket to present to journalists.
Google also touted the HD screen and powerful speakers of the new tablet.
U.S. customers can buy from next Tuesday on Google Play online shop and trade at prices starting at $ 229. It will then be launched in the coming weeks in Canada, the United Kingdom, Spain, France, Australia and South Korea.
Google has become Apple’s main rival for mobile devices, to the extent that its Android software is used by a variety of manufacturers of smartphones and tablets.
“Nearly one tablet two sold worldwide is based on Android,” said Wednesday the head of this division, Sundar Pichai.
According to him, more than 70 million Android tablets have been activated so far in the world.
